Netflix has released new images for Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.
The Academy Award-winning director is adapting the story of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who reanimates the dead via monstrous experimentation.
The film will have its world premiere in the main competition of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival.
First look images show Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as the monster. Isaac is best known for his roles in Dune (2021) and Moon Knight (2022). Elordi's credits, meanwhile, include Priscilla (2023) and Saltburn (2023).
The film also stars Mia Goth as Elizabeth Lavenza and Christoph Waltz as Harlander. Goth is the star of Ti West's X trilogy, while Waltz is a two-time Academy Award winner for his performances in Inglorious Basterds (2009) and Django Unchained (2012).
Charles Dance, Burn Gorman, David Bradley, Felix Kammerer, and Christian Convery complete the cast.
Del Toro's previous works include Pan's Labyrinth (2006) and The Shape of Water (2017), which earned him an Academy Award for Best Director. His most recent film is the stop-motion adaptation of Pinocchio (2022), starring Ewan McGregor and Cate Blanchett.
Del Toro told Collider in 2010 that “My favourite novel in the world is Frankenstein. I'm going to misquote it horribly, but the monster says, ‘I have such love in me, more than you can imagine. But, if I cannot provoke it, I will provoke fear.' As a child that was disenfranchised from everything, and that was in a world that was the wrong size, run by the wrong people, the wrong morale and the wrong rules, I felt completely outside of that, and I wanted some measure of control, and the measure of control I found was through fear.”
Frankenstein will be released on Netflix in November 2025.
