Vertigo Releasing has revealed the trailer for their new Catholic-themed horror film Consecration.
The official synopsis reads “After the suspicious death of her brother, a priest, Grace goes to the Mount Saviour Convent in Scotland to find out what really happened. Once there, she uncovers murder, sacrilege and a disturbing truth about her own past.”
Consecration stars Jena Malone, who is known for her role in The Hunger Games franchise as Johanna Mason. Malone has also starred in Pride and Prejudice (2005), and Nicolas Winding Refn's The Neon Demon (2016).
Also joining is Danny Huston, who has previously worked with directors such as Martin Scorsese, Alfonso Cuarón, and Alejandro González Iñárritu. He also portrayed Ben the butcher in the TV series Magic City (2012-2013). This performance earned Huston a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role.
Thoren Ferguson, Will Keen, and Dame Janet Suzman complete the main cast.
Consecration, which was shot on location in Scotland, originally made its debut in cinemas in early 2023. The film was also screened at the Glasgow Film Festival in that same year.
Christopher Smith directed and wrote the film alongside Laurie Cook. Smith's previous works include Creep (2004), Severance (2006), and The Banishing (2020). Cook and Smith previously collaborated on the psychological horror film Triangle (2009).
In a statement, Smith said his inspiration for the film came from his eerie associations with religious settings. He told Entertainment Weekly “I'm never more spooked out than if I walk into a church or a temple [..] I went into a synagogue recently and found the atmosphere in there so electrically-charged. I don't feel that in old houses. I wanted to make a movie about religion but do it seriously.”
Consecration will be available on digital platforms from June 16, 2025.
