Filmmaker Joachim Trier and actor Renate Reinsve have a lot to live up to. The Worst Person in the World let cinephiles outside of Scandinavia appreciate the pair's talent (it made it in FILMHOUNDS' top ten of 2022), and even garnered awards season attention. With Trier and Reinsve working together again on Sentimental Value, the anticipation is at fever pitch.
With a gala premiere at the London Film Festival, FILMHOUNDS joined in on the Sentimental Value red carpet action. The film sees two sisters (Reinsve and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas) confronting their past as their absent father (Stellan Skarsgard) returns after the death of their mother. With the family being involved in the film industry as performers and filmmakers, there was obviously a connection between the cast and their characters. “I definitely brought in that aspect, that I was a theatre actor for years and years”, explained Reinsve. “I did mostly comedy when I was in the theatres, and I've done so many dramatic roles in films, so it was nice to actually have some likeness in [those] scenes.”
The sisterly relationship is a big part of Sentimental Value, something Lilleaas highlighted that is came naturally. “We had rehearsals in the different locations, which is really nice, because you get to feel the place out”, she recalls. “We [Lilleaas and Reinsve] talked about our characters, and I talked to Joachim [Trier]. We didn't really plan anything or do anything specific, we just developed over time because we had time. Throughout the shooting as well, we sort of blended in to this sister dynamic that hasn't really left us.”
We also spoke with Reinsve and Lilleaas about the relationship with Trier, filming in the centrepiece family home, and being at the London Film Festival.
