Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are reportedly in talks to return for a brand new “The Mummy” movie.
Despite Universal Pictures declining to comment on the reports, sources have told Deadline that the duo will reprise the roles of Rick and Evelyn O' Connell.
Furthermore, reports suggest that Radio Silence's Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will direct the film. The filmmaking duo has previously dipped into the world of Universal Monsters with their 2024 horror hit, Abigail. They are also known for helming 2019's Ready or Not, Scream (2022), and Scream VI (2023).
Fraser and Weisz previously starred in Universal's 1999 reboot The Mummy, which follows the story of several treasure hunters who accidentally awaken a cursed Egyptian mummy. The film became a box office hit, earning a worldwide total of $422.5 million from a budget of $80 million. Its success spawned two sequels: The Mummy Returns (2001) and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008), and a prequel, The Scorpion King (2002), which starred Dwayne ‘The Rock' Johnson.
Universal attempted to revive the franchise in 2017 with a brand new The Mummy film starring Tom Cruise. Separate from the studio's previous outings, the film became a critical and commercial failure and halted any further plans for an interconnected “Dark Universe”.
Fraser has enjoyed a career renaissance as of late, winning the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in The Whale (2022). The actor has spoken about his decision to step back from Hollywood in the 2000s following a series of personal issues and professional pressures.
A potential Fraser-Weisz lead outing isn't the only Mummy project in development. Director Lee Cronin (Evil Dead Rise, The Hole in the Ground) has a brand new Mummy film on the way, which is slated for release in 2026.
