Moroccan filmmaker Maryam Touzani made a splash in Palm Springs back in 2023 with her critically acclaimed The Blue Caftan. A tender exploration of love in different forms—romantic, queer, platonic—it was no wonder that audiences at festivals worldwide fell for it. Touzani returns to the Palm Springs International Film Festival with another compassionate crowd-pleaser; Calle Málaga.

Opening the 37th edition of the festival, Touzani spoke with FILMHOUNDS on the red carpet. “It’s wonderful to be back with a film in Palm Springs”, she exclaims. “That the film is the opening film is very, very beautiful and special. So I feel very honoured tonight.”

Touzani also talked about taking Calle Málaga from Venice to Palm Springs, what she hopes audience reactions will be, and the importance of festivals programming international cinema.
