The BBC has released a trailer for a new Doctor Who spinoff titled The War Between the Land and the Sea.

The five-part series is the next chapter in the Whoniverse, following the series fifteen finale.

The official synopsis reads “When a fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing themselves to humanity, an international crisis is triggered. With the entire population at risk, UNIT step into action as the land and sea wage war.”

Newly released images show Russell Tovey as Barclay, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Salt.

The War Between the Land and the Sea also stars Jemma Redgrave, Alexander Devrient, and Ruth Madeley. Colin McFarlane, Adrian Lukis, Patrick Baladi, Francesca Corney, Mei Mac, and Vincent Franklin round out the main cast.

Additional guest stars include Waleed Hammad, Iestyn Arwel, Hannah Donaldson, Manpreet Bachu and Ann Akinjirin.

The new limited series is the joint venture of Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies and A Discovery of Witches writer Pete McTighe.

In a statement for the BBC, Davies said “The excitement is beginning to build, as the Whoniverse expands. I can't wait for people to see this magnificent cast in such a powerful, vital, epic story. Look to the seas!”

The series is produced by Bad Wolf with BBC Studios for the BBC and Disney Branded Television.

Dylan Holmes Williams, who previously worked on the American psychological horror series Servant (2019-2023), will direct all of the episodes. He also previously directed two Doctor Who season one episodes in 2024.

The War Between the Land and the Sea will air on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the UK, and exclusively on Disney+ outside of the UK. The release date for the series is currently unknown.
