Netflix has released the first teaser trailer for Guillermo Del Toro's Frankenstein.
The film follows brilliant but egotistical scientist Victor Frankenstein, who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.
Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein was released in 1818, and has inspired countless on-screen adaptations that have spanned multiple decades.
“This is, for me, the culmination of a journey that has occupied most of my life,” said Del Toro at Netflix's Tudum event. “I first read Mary Shelley‘s Frankenstein as a kid and saw Boris Karloff in what became for me an almost religious state. Monsters have become my personal belief system.”
“Exploring the relationship between humanity and monsters, creator and creation, father and son, has consumed my stores again and again,” he added. “I wanted to make this film before I even had a camera, and I've been actively pursuing it now for over 25 years.”
Del Toro is best known for his work on The Shape of Water (2017), for which he received both an Academy Award and BAFTA for Best Director. The acclaimed filmmaker's other credits include Pan's Labyrinth (2006), Blade 2 (2002), and Nightmare Alley (2021). He most recently helmed an adaptation of Pinocchio for Netflix in 2022, which starred Ewan McGregor and Cate Blanchett.
Frankenstein stars Oscar Isaac (Dune, Moon Knight) as Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi (Priscilla, Saltburn) as Frankenstein's monster. The film will also feature Mia Goth (X, Pearl, Maxxine) as Elizabeth Lavenza and Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) as Dr. Pretorius.
Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Christian Convery, Ralph Ineson, and Charles Dance round off the cast.
Frankenstein will premiere exclusively on Netflix in November 2025.
