Universal has released the official trailer for Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale.
The Grand Finale is the final film in the Downton film trilogy, which is a continuation of the Emmy Award-winning series Downton Abbey (2010-2015).
The new film follows the aristocratic Crawley family and their staff at Downton as they enter the 1930s. The Grand Finale sees Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) navigating London's high society, whilst Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) and Lady Grantham (Elizabeth McGovern) oversee the county estate.
While plot details are limited, the trailer shows some of the characters and cast members set to return for the final instalment. This includes Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, and Phyllis Logan. Robert James-Collier, Joanne Froggatt, Allen Leech, and Penelope Wilton also feature.
Joining the cast is Academy Award nominee Paul Giamatti as Harold Levinson. Giamatti previously starred in one episode of the original series, but has until now not appeared in the films.
Giamatti has previously teased his character's importance to the third film's storyline. He told Entertainment Weekly that “I do something quite important…I was like, wow, this is random, I have a lot to do with the end of this whole series…I do something that makes a big difference to how everything ends.”
Dame Maggie Smith, who played the Dowager Countess of Grantham, passed away in September 2024. The trailer includes a framed photo of her hanging on the walls.
Director Simon Curtis is set to return, having previously directed Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022). Furthermore, Academy Award-winning writer Julian Fellowes will write the film, having created and co-written the original series.
Footage from the new film was shown at Cinemacon in early April, as part of Universal's slate of upcoming movies.
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale will be released in cinemas on 12 September 2025.
