Blumhouse has recently announced that a sequel to Ma is in development at the horror studio.

Directed by The Help‘s Tate Taylor, Ma follows a lonely woman (Octavia Spencer) who befriends a group of teenagers and decides to let them party at her house. But just when the kids think their luck couldn’t get any better, things start happening that make them question the intention of their host.

Blumhouse announced at their Business of Fear event that the Academy Award-winning actress will return for a sequel to the 2019 revenge horror movie. The project is in early stages and no director is currently attached. However, in July 2023, Melissa McCarthy expressed a desire to work on a sequel with Spencer.

“‘Ma has proven to be a social phenomenon since its release in 2019, with fans eagerly embracing the film and Octavia’s iconic performance as Ma,” Jason Blum, founder and CEO of Blumhouse Productions, expressed at the event. “Ma likes to say ‘don’t make me drink alone,’ so we’re thrilled Octavia will join us again for a second round.”

Blum is referring to Ma‘s growing presence in meme culture. The movie has been subject to countless jokes and running gags online, with audiences embracing the silliness of Blumhouse’s thriller and running with it. This has clearly contributed to the studio’s decision to bring the property back for a long-awaited sequel.

Atomic Monster’s Creative Executive, Alayna Glasthal, used the announcement to highlight the importance of tailored marketing strategies, citing M3GAN’s viral TikTok dance bringing in a younger audience.

No further cast has been announced for the Ma sequel. Given their fates at the end of the first movie, it’s unlikely that figures like Tate Taylor, Diana Silvers, or Corey Fogelmanis will return, though Spencer’s involvement proves that it’s not impossible.
