Hulu's Buffy The Vampire Slayer reboot has cast Ryan Kiera Armstrong in the leading role for the series, which will also see Sarah Michelle Gellar return as Buffy Summers.
Plot details remain under wraps, but it was previously reported that the new show will focus on a new Slayer who is described as “a cerebral 16-year-old named Nova (likely a placeholder), who is very smart and a bit of a loner.”
The announcement was made via Gellar's Instagram, where she broke the news to Armstrong in a touching video.
“From the moment I saw Ryan's audition, I knew there was only one girl that I wanted by my side,” said Gellar. “To have that kind of emotional intelligence, and talent, at such a young age is truly a gift. The bonus is that her smile lights up even the darkest room.”
Series writers Nola and Lilla Zuckerman shared their excitement for the casting, saying: “We are so overjoyed to have found this generation's slayer in Ryan Kiera Armstrong, she absolutely blew us away — there is no question in our mind that she is the chosen one.”
Armstrong has recently appeared in the Disney+ Star Wars series Skeleton Crew. She has also previously starred in American Horror Story: Red Tide and the 2022 horror reboot Firestarter. Other acting credits include IT: Chapter Two (2019), The Tomorrow War (2021), and Black Widow (2021).
News of a Buffy revival first broke in February 2025. Academy Award-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) is set to direct the pilot, which was written by Nola and Lilla Zuckerman.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer originally began with a 1992 film starring Kristy Swanson. The television series arrived five years later and enjoyed a seven-season run.
