A Minecraft Movie has officially entered the top 50 highest-grossing films of all time in the UK & Ireland, holding off Sinners and Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005).
According to Screen Daily, the video game-inspired comedy has broken into the top 50 by adding £2.5 million in its fourth week. This totals up to £51.7m, overtaking films such as Quantum of Solace (2008) and The Dark Knight (2008). A Minecraft Movie is now just over £5m away from becoming the highest-grossing video game adaptation ever at the UK box office.
Meanwhile, Ryan Coogler's vampire horror Sinners added £2.4m to its total on the second weekend. This brings the film's overall UK gross to £7.3 million. This means that two Warner Bros. Pictures releases are leading the UK box office for the second week in succession.
A re-release of Revenge of the Sith, the final instalment in George Lucas' Star Wars prequel trilogy, landed in third place. The film returned to UK cinemas to commemorate the 20th anniversary of its original release, when it made £39.3m. The re-release managed an impressive £1.8m.
Two new UK releases fill out the top five on this week's chart, with Gavin O'Connor's The Accountant 2 and David F. Sandberg's Until Dawn landing in fourth and fifth place. The former managed £906,660 across 573 sites, marking a slight decrease on the original film's performance of £1.6m. The latter opened to £566,028 across 414 locations.
The Penguin Lessons and The Amateur sit just outside of this week's chart, experiencing drops of 48% and 68%. This brings their totals to £2.2m and £3.9m respectively.
The 20th anniversary re-release of Joe Wright's Pride and Prejudice (2005) managed just £164,493, compared to its original gross of £14.6 million.
