It is the dawn of World War III. In the western mountains of America, a group of teenagers band together to defend their town, and their country, from invading Soviet forces. An incredible cast – including Patrick Swayze (Roadhouse), C. Thomas Howell (The Outsiders), Charlie Sheen (Platoon), Lea Thompson (Back to the Future), Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing) and Powers Boothe (Southern Comfort) – take up arms against an invading Soviet army in Red Dawn, the superb hit 1980s actioner written a directed by cinematic powerhouse John Milius (Conan the Barbarian), and co-written by Kevin Reynolds (Waterwold).

Red Dawn boasts a stellar cast of young actors who although well known and recognizable hadn't yet become the stars they would grow up to be. Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen play brothers Jed and Matt, Lea Thompson and Jennifer Grey play sisters Erica and Toni and C Thomas Howell plays Robert alongside a few others who make up the band of teens protecting their town from some rather incompetent baddies. America is in the midst of WW3 and it would seem the only people brave enough to face and outwit this huge army who has invaded this southern town are The Wolverines.

Red Dawn earned the very first PG-13 classification for being too violent for the regular PG rating and yet not violent enough for an R. This is The Goonies meets Lord of the Flies meets The Hunt for Red October. There are some pretty decent practical effects and explosions to behold as well as some quite brutal scenes such as a mass execution of innocent civilians.

It is vital to remember Red Dawn was made in 1984 at the heart of the Regan presidency and when anti-Soviet propaganda was all the rage. Red Dawn is the kind of film one might expect from a director like Millius who wrote Apocalypse Now. If you are able to not question why a bunch of high schoolers are so good at tactical maneuvers and highly accurate with an RPG and you have a nostalgia or fondness for bonkers 80s movies then this beautiful 4K UHD edition with a plethora of awesome extras and special features from Altitude is a must buy.
