has released a new trailer for their upcoming animated feature Elio.

The sci-fi-inspired family movie stars Yonas Kibreab in the titular role, with Zoe Saldaña starring as the young boy's Aunt Olga. Saldaña recently won an Academy Award for her performance in Emilia Pérez.

Jameela Jamil, Remy Edgerly, and Shirley Henderson star in supporting roles. Brad Garrett, meanwhile, voices the villainous Lord Grigon.

Pixar's official synopsis for their upcoming film reads “This summer, moviegoers will meet Elio, an 11-year-old whose biggest wish is to get abducted by aliens […] In this big-screen adventure, Elio will travel millions of miles across the universe, encountering a host of out-of-this-world creatures who just might help him figure out exactly where he belongs.”

Elio was first announced on 9th September 2022 and has since been delayed twice. The first time was due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes of 2023 and subsequent changes to the studio's management. The film was then delayed again to avoid competition with Dreamworks' live-action How To Train Your Dragon remake.

Elio was originally set to be directed by Coco's co-director Adrian Molina, but was replaced by Turning Red's Domee Shi and Burrow's Madeline Sharafian. Despite these behind-the-scenes disruptions (which also saw Barbie's America Ferrera depart from the project), Molina remains credited on Elio for his initial direction.

Pixar's Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter shared his positive thoughts on the upcoming new film. He told Yahoo News “I can't really even talk about it without giving away plot points, but I think [Shi and Sharafian] made some major discoveries on [Elio] that really helped the audience to connect and to move forward with the character into the second act, which is, course, where all the meat happens.”

Elio will be released in UK cinemas on 20th June 2025.
