Netflix has released a trailer for their upcoming anime series Devil May Cry.
The new show, which adapts the game franchise of the same name, has been created by Castlevania (2017-2021) showrunner Adi Shankar. The cast includes Johnny Yong Bosch, Scout Taylor-Compton, Hoon Lee, and Chris Coppola.
The Devil May Cry franchise centres on a demon hunter named Dante who thwarts supernatural, demonic invasions of Earth. To date, the games have sold over 32 million copies worldwide. The most recent mainline instalment is Devil May Cry 5 (2019).
Netflix's official synopsis reads “Sinister forces are at play at the portal between the human and demon realms. In the middle of it all is Dante, an orphaned demon hunter for hire, unaware that the fate of both worlds hangs around his neck.”
The new Devil May Cry series also features posthumous performances from Kevin Conroy and Tony Todd. Conroy, who passed away in 2022, is best known for the role of Batman across various DC films, television programmes, and video games, beginning with Batman: The Animated Series (1992-1995). Shankar has since confirmed that no AI was used for Conroy's performance.
Todd, whose role has not yet been officially confirmed, died in November 2024. He is best known for his roles in Candyman (1992) and the Final Destination horror franchise. Shankar previously shared a tribute to Todd on X (formerly Twitter), saying “It was a pleasure working with you on my DMC series. I was your fan before we met, and working with you only deepened my admiration.”
Shankar is the youngest ever producer to have a film top the North American box office. Furthermore, he has been attached to a TV adaptation of the Assassin's Creed games franchise since 2017.
Devil May Cry is released on Netflix on 3rd April 2025.
