Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy has debuted at the top of the UK box office with the biggest-ever UK opening for a romantic comedy.
The fourth film in the Bridget Jones franchise, which began in 2001, opened with £10.2 million across its opening weekend. This represents the biggest-ever debut for the series. Screen Daily reports that it is set to be the highest-grossing release of 2025 so far within the next week.
Mad About the Boy focuses on Jones (Academy Award winner Renée Zellweger) who is now a widowed single mum who balances dating and parenthood, with support from her former partner Daniel (Hugh Grant) as well as her friends and family. She finds herself being romantically pursued by a younger man (Leo Woodall), while also forming an unexpected, close relationship with her son's science teacher Mr Wallaker (Academy Award winner Chiwetel Ejiofor).
Also opening in cinemas this past weekend is Captain America: Brave New World, starring Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson / Captain America and Harrison Ford as Thaddeus Ross / Red Hulk. The 35th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) debuted with £6.4 million for Disney. It is the second-highest-ever opening for a Captain America film, behind only the £14.4. million of Captain America: Civil War (2016).
Dog Man is third following its second week in cinemas. The Universal animated adventure made an additional £1.9 million.
Opening in fourth place is the romantic horror Heart Eyes, starring Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding. Josh Ruben's slasher centres on the so-called ‘Heart Eyes killer' who stalks and murders couples on Valentine's Day. The film has opened with £613,000 for Paramount.
Mufasa: The Lion King rounds out the top five with £453,824, taking its total to £30.9 million.
