At a remote desert rest stop, a knife salesman and waitress become entangled with two bank robbers and their plan to escape. As the group anxiously waits for the gas truck to arrive to fill up the pumps, a few more strangers with their own plans arrive, adding to the bubbling tension. With few options and everyone in possession of a gun, the knife salesman is woefully ill-equipped for what's to come. Reminiscent of films that take place in one location and slowly build tension, The Last Stop in Yuma County is similar to a low-key Free Fire, except instead of a constant shoot-out, it's the calm before the storm. As the tension mounts, waiting to see who cracks first, this thriller has you hooked on what will happen.
As well structured as Yuma County is – even the characters trapped in the diner who we know very little about feel more than just window dressing – the film does seem penned in by its own premise. Any story that takes place in one location will always feel limited in what it can achieve, and the real action only happens in the film's final fifteen minutes. These bigger set pieces feel a touch too late, added for spectacle rather than story. The couple of scenes set in the police station are a welcome respite away from the sweating patrons of the diner and it's only a shame that more weren't added to fully develop the film.
Despite the closed-in feeling throughout, there is no doubt that writer and director Frances Galluppi achieved what they set out to. Yuma Country is a slow-burn thriller, adding in elements along the way that keep the film simmering. With no gas to escape, no phone for assistance and no air conditioning in the blistering heat, salvation seems far away. And with only a few people knowing the full picture, the arrival of each unwitting person only adds to the tension in this bubbling thriller.
