A reboot of the supernatural drama series (1997-2003) is nearing a pilot order at , according to Deadline.

While plot details remain under wraps, it is reported that will reprise the role of Buffy Summers.

Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao is set to direct the pilot episode, which also has Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman attached to write. Zhao is best known for writing and directing Nomadland (2020), starring Frances McDormand, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe entry Eternals (2021).

The new project will be spearheaded by 20th Television and Searchlight Studios.

Gellar, who currently stars in Dexter: Original Sin, recently spoke more about her openness to return to the role. She told The Drew Barrymore Show “It's funny, I always used to say no, because it's in its bubble and it's so perfect. But watching Sex and the City and seeing Dexter, and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.'

“It could be anything. It's a universe. And it makes you realize that in this world, we need those heroes, I think, more so than ever.”

No other members of the original cast—which includes Alyson Hannigan, Nicholas Brendon, and Anthony Head—have been attached to the project so far. It has however been confirmed that original showrunner Joss Whedon will not be involved.

Whedon has been absent from Hollywood since 2021. The writer and director has faced numerous misconduct allegations and was accused of creating a toxic work environment on the sets of both Buffy and its spin-off series Angel (1999–2004).

Buffy the Vampire Slayer originally began with a 1992 film starring Kristy Swanson. The television series arrived five years later and enjoyed a seven-season run, first on The WB and then on UPN.
