MUBI has announced a streaming date for Magnus von Horn's psychological horror film The Girl With the Needle.
The film, which is released in UK & Irish cinemas today, will also make its streaming debut at the end of January exclusively on MUBI's own platform.
The Girl With the Needle stars Vic Carmen Sonne as Karoline, a nurse living in Copenhagen shortly after World War One. When confronted with unemployment, pregnancy, and loneliness, she is taken in by the mysterious Dagmar (Trine Dyrholm) to work for an underground adoption centre for unwanted children. The bond that the pair form is disrupted by an unexpected and unwelcome discovery.
Horn's third feature film was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards, losing to Emilia Pérez. It has also been shortlisted for the Oscar for Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards. The Girl With the Needle was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival last year.
In a statement, MUBI said, “A standout selection from the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, The Girl with the Needle is a dark fairy tale about one woman's search for tenderness and morality in a cruel world.”
In a previous interview with Variety, Horn explained that he wanted “Not to just make a straight genre piece [but] to flirt with genre. That became a great lens to look at the story.”
Sonne's other credits include Isabella Eklöf's drama Holiday (2018) and E. L. Katz's American action-horror Azrael (2024). Horn made his feature directorial debut with The Here After (2015). His follow-up, Sweat (2020), was due to compete at the 2020 Cannes Film Festival before it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Girl With the Needle will stream exclusively on MUBI from 24th January 2025.
