The Disney title took £2.2 million across its latest weekend in cinemas, for a total gross of £23.9 million. The Barry Jenkins film has now exceeded the £22.6 million original gross of The Lion King (1994), albeit Screen Daily reports that the inflation rates are substantially different.
Robert Eggers' vampire remake Nosferatu is second with £2 million for Universal. This takes the horror film's total to £8.8 million. It is ahead of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which added £1.5 million in its third week for a total of £20.9 million.
StudioCanal's romantic comedy-drama We Live in Time is fourth with £1.3 million. Starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, the film has reached £5.2 million. It is set to become director John Crowley's highest-grossing film in the UK.
Babygirl, starring Nicole Kidman, opened in fifth place with £1 million. The erotic thriller centres on a powerful CEO who puts her family and her career in jeopardy when she begins a passionate affair with a younger colleague. TIME has named Babygirl as their top film of 2024. Writer and director Halina Reijn's film also stars Harris Dickinson, Sophie Wilde, and Antonio Banderas.
Behind Babygirl, Wicked added £877,940 during its eighth weekend in cinemas. This takes the Broadway adaptation up to a £58.8 million total. John M. Chu's musical has overtaken the £57.6 million of Deadpool & Wolverine. It is also just behind the £59.2 million of 2024's highest-grossing title, Inside Out 2.
Other new entries include the comedy-drama A Real Pain, written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg (who also co-stars alongside Kieran Culkin), and Pablo Larrain's Maria, starring Angelina Jolie. The two films debuted with £705,814 and £382,771 respectively.
