The nominations for the 97th Academy Awards have been announced, with Emilia Pérez leading the field with thirteen nominations.
Jacques Audiard's musical, starring Karla Sofía Gascón and Zoe Saldaña, is in the running for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. Audiard is also nominated for Best Director, with Gascón and Saldaña recognised in their respective acting categories.
Behind Emilia Pérez are fellow Best Picture nominees Wicked and The Brutalist with ten nominations each. Wicked‘s Cynthia Ervo and Ariana Grande are nominated for best leading and supporting actress respectively. Meanwhile, The Brutalist‘s Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones are recognised in their acting categories.
The Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown has picked up eight nominations, including a first-ever Best Director nomination for James Mangold. All of the nominees for Best Director this year have never been nominated for the award before.
Papal thriller Conclave is also nominated for eight awards, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actor for Ralph Fiennes. Edward Berger, however, is not nominated for Best Director.
Sean Baker's Anora has six nominations, ahead of Coralie Fargeat's The Substance with five and Robert Eggers' Nosferatu with four.
Other notable nominees include Dune: Part Two, which will compete for Best Picture. It has also been nominated for Best Visual Effects, alongside Alien: Romulus and the Robbie Williams biopic Better Man.
There were no nominations for Challengers or Queer, Italian director Luca Guadagnino's two features from the past year. This means that Daniel Craig loses out on a nomination, coinciding with his absence from the BAFTA shortlist. Furthermore, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross miss out on a nomination for their Challengers score despite their success at The Golden Globes.
The 97th Academy Awards take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles on 2nd March 2025.
