Sony Pictures has released the first official trailer for 28 Years Later.
The zombie apocalypse sequel will see Danny Boyle return to the director's chair, alongside original writer Alex Garland. The pair previously collaborated on the original 28 Days Later (2002).
The official synopsis reads “It's been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.”
Aaron Taylor Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes star in the film. Jack O'Connell and Alfie Williams are also included in the cast. Furthermore, Academy Award winner Cillian Murphy returns having also starred in the original film.
28 Years Later was reportedly shot alongside another sequel titled 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple, which is helmed by Candyman (2021) director Nia DaCosta. The two entries are reportedly set to form the first two parts of a brand-new trilogy.
28 Days Later follows a handful of survivors trying to find sanctuary after a mysterious, incurable virus spread throughout Britain. The film grossed $82.7 million at the worldwide box office from a budget of $8 million. The Hollywood Reporter states that the film's success triggered a “boom of zombie movies” and made “zombies terrifying for the first time in years.”
The first sequel, 28 Weeks Later (2007), stars Robert Carlyle, Rose Byrne, and Jeremy Renner.
28 Years Later will be released in UK cinemas on 20th June 2025.
