Jennifer Love Hewitt has closed a deal to return to the I Know What You Did Last Summer (IKWYDLS) franchise.
The award-winning actress, who played Julie James in the original I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997), confirmed the news via Instagram. Love Hewitt included the caption “It's never too late to go back. Julie James is returning.”
The new film is currently scheduled for release on 18th July 2025.
Just prior to the official announcement, Love Hewitt recorded an episode of the podcast I've Never Said This Before With Tommy DiDario in which she said “I really want to do something, and I want to be there for Julie James fans. I just want it to feel like, you know, if she comes back then it means something.”
Love Hewitt reunites with former co-star Freddie Prinze Jr, whose return was confirmed in September 2024. The duo starred in the original 1997 slasher film alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe. They also led the first sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998).
New cast members for the upcoming legacy sequel include Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, and Chase Sui.
The latest instalment of the IKWYDLS franchise is being directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. Robinson previously directed the teen black comedy Do Revenge (2022) and co-wrote Marvel's Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) alongside Taika Waititi.
I Know What You Did Last Summer follows a group of friends who covered up a tragic accident they were involved in, only to be targeted by a hook-wielding maniac one year later. It was written by Scream (1996) writer Kevin Williamson and directed by Jim Gillespie.
I Know What You Did Last Summer grossed $125 million worldwide and remained at the top of the US box office for three consecutive weeks.
