Sophie Turner is reportedly in talks to lead Amazon's upcoming Tomb Raider series, based on the video game franchise of the same name.
Deadline is reporting that the English actress is in discussions to play the lead role of archaeologist Lara Croft.
Turner is best known for playing Sansa Stark in the HBO series Game of Thrones (2011-2019), for which she received an Emmy nomination for best supporting actress in a drama. She is also known for playing Jean Grey in the Marvel films X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) and its sequel Dark Phoenix (2019).
Turner's most recent credits include the ITV miniseries Joan and the HBO original series The Staircase.
The new series was first announced in May. It is being developed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who is best known for creating the BAFTA-winning comedy series Fleabag (2016-2019).
In a statement, Waller-Bridge said “Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators. Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can't wait to go on this adventure.”
The series has been described as “epic” and “globe-trotting” by Head of Amazon & MGM Studios Jen Salke.
Croft has previously been portrayed by Alicia Vikander and Angelina Jolie in a series of live-action films. Additionally, Hayley Atwell voices the adventuring archaeologist in the Netflix animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, which premiered earlier this year.
The first game in the series was released in 1996. Multiple sequels followed, including Tomb Raider 2 (1997), Tomb Raider: Chronicles (2000), and also the more recent Survivor Trilogy by Crystal Dynamics. Furthermore, in April 2023, Croft was voted the most iconic video game character of all time in a poll of over 4000 gamers.
