It's been a great year for My Old Ass. The coming-of-age flick was a hit at this year's edition of the Sundance Film Festival, garnered rave reviews (we even gave the film five stars), and star Maisy Stella recently received a Breakthrough Performance nomination with the 2024 Gotham Awards.
Stella is 18-year-old Elliott, who comes face to face with her “old ass” (Aubrey Plaza) who appears after a psychedelic trip. Older Elliott passes on vital life lessons to her younger self as she prepares to say goodbye to her gorgeous Ontario home and move away for college.
Before the film becomes digitally available on November 7, FILMHOUNDS spoke with Stella and director Megan Park about My Old Ass, in particular about the film's authentic exploration of bisexuality and exploring one's self. Park explained, “It was very important that this didn't become a story about somebody who identifies as being a lesbian and then identifies as being straight by the end of it because of a man… We really did want to have some bisexual awareness in the film and just have conversations that we hadn't seen necessarily in coming-of-age, or in a lot of, movies.”
You can watch the full interview below, where the pair discuss their relationship, what they would tell their younger selves, and the film's big musical number.
