Universal's musical adaptation Wicked is sitting at the top of the global box office after its opening weekend in cinemas.
Starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande-Butera, Wicked grossed $164.2 million across 63 territories. Screen Daily reports that this is the biggest-ever global box office debut for a Broadway adaptation. The record was previously held by Tom Hooper's Les Misérables (2012), which debuted with $103 million.
Wicked is based on the award-winning stage musical of the same name by Stephen Schwartz. The film is yet to be released in major markets such as China, France, and Germany.
Gladiator II has fallen to second in its second week of release, grossing an additional $106 million. This takes Ridley Scott's historical epic sequel to a global box office total of $221 million. This includes opening with $3 million in China.
The Christmas adventure-comedy Red One added $22 million to its cumulative gross following its release in North America. The Dwayne Johnson-starring film is now up to $122 million worldwide.
In fourth, the Chinese comedy-drama Her Story has debuted with $16.6 million, all from China alone. Directed by Shao Yihui, Her Story focuses on two women in differing circumstances who have to contend with personal challenges.
Venom: The Last Dance is fifth with $11.8 million. Sony's Marvel antihero sequel has now reached $456.4 million at the global box office. It is ahead of Crayon Shin-chan the Movie: Our Dinosaur Story. The Japanese anime made an additional $8.4 million.
Universal's The Wild Robot added $5.8 million for a $317.4 million cumulative gross. It is ahead of Chinese drama To Gather Around and StudioCanal's Paddington in Peru, which both brought in $5.4 million. They are ahead of the World War Two thriller Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin, with $5.1 million.
