Kneecap Leads 2024 BIFA Nominations

The 2024 British Independent Film Award (BIFA) nominations have been announced, with Rich Peppiatt's Kneecap leading the field.

The Irish rap trio origin story has secured fourteen nominations, including Best British Independent Film and also Best Director for Peppiatt.

After Kneecap, Rose Glass' Love Lies Bleeding has garnered twelve nominations. The romantic thriller stars Kristen Stewart and Katy O'Brian. Glass previously won the 2020 Award for Best Debut Director for her debut feature Saint Maud (2019), a psychological horror starring Morfydd Clark.

Also receiving multiple nominations is Nora Fingscheidt's The Outrun, based on Amy Liptrot's memoir of the same name. The film stars Saoirse Ronan as a recovering alcoholic who leaves London to stay with her parents in Orkney.

Other nominated films include Andrea Arnold's Bird, Mike Leigh's Hard Truths, and Rungano Nyoni's On Becoming A Guinea Fowl.

Additionally, Sean Baker's romantic comedy-drama Anora competes alongside Payal Kapadia' All We Imagine as Light and Alice Rohrwacher's La Chimera for the Best International Independent Film award.

The British Independent Film Awards were established in 1998. The parent organisation, BIFA, is committed to “celebrating remarkable films and outstanding talent from the British film industry and beyond,” according to their website.

Previous BIFA winners include Florence Pugh for Lady Macbeth (2016), Josh O'Connor for Only You (2018), and also director Andrew Haigh for All of Us Strangers (2023).

will take place at the Roundhouse in Camden, London on 8th December. Announcing the news, BIFA Directors Amy Gustin and Deena Wallace said “We're delighted to be returning to Roundhouse this year.”

“The opportunity to work with our production partners and the brilliant team at the venue to do something different and really special in the space is incredibly exciting for us, and we hope for the industry we celebrate too.”
