Warner Bros's Joker: Folie à Deux has opened at the top of the UK box office.
The film is a follow-up to Joker (2019) and loosely based on the DC Comics character of the same name. Joaquin Phoenix reprises his role as Arthur Fleck/Joker, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor. Todd Phillips also returns as director, while Lady Gaga joins the cast as Fleck's love interest Harleen Quinzel.
The jukebox musical thriller has opened with £5.7 million. Screen Daily reports this this is is 54.9% less than the £12.6 million opening posted by the first film.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice moves down to second, earning £1.1 million in its fifth week. Tim Burton's sequel has now reached £22.8 million at the UK box office.
Speak No Evil, starring James McAvoy, grossed £408,214 in its fourth week. The psychological horror has made £4.8 million in total.
In fourth place, MUBI's The Substance grossed £358,000, taking its total gross to £2.2 million. It is ahead of The Outrun starring Saoirse Ronan, which made £319,542 in its second week. The addiction drama sits in fifth place with a total of £1.1 million.
Despicable Me 4 is down by 16%, adding £295,462 in its thirteenth week. The family animation's total has risen to £47.4 million, nearing the £47.5 million of Despicable Me 2 (2013).
In its fourth week, StudioCanal's Lee made £237,762 to take its UK box office total to £3.4 million. It is ahead of 200% Wolf with £124,589.
Aaron Schimberg's black comedy thriller A Different Man debuted with £88,947, including previews. The film premiered at Sundance in January and stars Sebastian Stan, Renate Reinsve, and Adam Pearson. Stan plays an actor with facial disfigurement who undergoes experimental surgery.
