Netflix has revealed that production on Happy Gilmore 2, a sequel to the Adam Sandler-starring comedy Happy Gilmore (1996), has begun.
The streaming service announced the news on social media. On X (formerly Twitter), Netflix shared a picture of Gilmore's old hockey jersey to confirm that the sequel was officially greenlit.
Sandler shared the same image on his Instagram, along with the caption “It ain't over. The way I see it… we've only just begun.”
Happy Gilmore follows a wannabe hockey player with a short fuse who puts his aspirations on hold after discovering his talent for golf. Mentored by the legendary Derick “Chubbs” Peterson (Carl Weathers), Gilmore decides to try and win big to buy back his grandmother's house, which is at risk of being repossessed. To do so, he has to beat the best in the business, Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald), who looks down his nose at Gilmore and his ilk at every opportunity.
Netflix has confirmed that both Sandler and McDonald will be returning. Benny Safdie is also starring, while Deadline has revealed that the rapper Bad Bunny is also joining the cast. Furthermore, EMPIRE reports that Taylor Swift's partner and American football player Travis Kelce is set to appear in the film.
News of a sequel was first reported in March 2024, when McDonald confirmed that Sandler had shown him a copy of the script. Both actors briefly reprised their roles in 2021 to celebrate the original's 25th anniversary.
In a statement, Netflix said “It's currently unclear how the film will resurrect Gilmore's golf career, but one thing's for sure: In the real world, at least, Happy Gilmore is a legend. Even the world's best golfers agree.”
American director Kyle Newacheck is set to helm the sequel. No release date or plot details have been announced.
