Netflix has confirmed that sci-fi series Supacell has been renewed for a second season.
Created by British artist Rapman, Supacell follows a group of ordinary black south Londoners who develop super powers because of their connection to the condition Sickle Cell Disease.
The first season received a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
In a statement, Rapman commented that he can't wait for fans to see the second installment, saying “For me season one was always an origin story. Season two is when the journey really begins. Season two was my Batman Begins, Season two is my Dark Knight,”
Supacell was in the Netflix global top 10 for six weeks. Deadline previously described the series as “a hit for Netflix, one of its biggest to come out of the UK for some time.”
The series' characters include delivery driver Michael, played by Doctor Who and Shifters‘ Tosin Cole. He taps into his newfound powers to try and save his girlfriend Dionne (Adelayo Adedayo) from danger. The cast also features Ghetts as Krazy, Josh Teduku as Tazer, Calvin Demba as Rodney, and Nadine Mills as Sabrina.
It has not been confirmed how many of the cast members will be returning for the second season.
Rapman previously told Netflix that “I've always had it [mapped out] to season three. I know how season two ends. I've got stuff planned for this story. I've had this in my head for years, so I'm ready to go.”
The rapper and record producer also serves as the showrunner, executive producer and lead director for the series.
Rapman also directed the BAFTA-nominated film Blue Story (2019). As a musician, he is currently signed with Jay-Z's label Roc Nation. In 2022, he was appointed MBE in the Birthday Honours from Elizabeth II for services to drama and music.
