Deadpool & Wolverine, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, has debuted at the top of the UK box office.
The third film in the Deadpool franchise made £12.6 million across its opening weekend. Screen Daily reports that this is the highest box office debut of the year so far. It is also the highest for any Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film since Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022).
The new film has eclipsed Deadpool (2016) and Deadpool 2 (2018), which opened with £10 million and £7.7 million respectively. Deadpool & Wolverine integrates the two titular characters into the MCU for the first time and sees Deadpool team up with an alternate universe's Wolverine.
Despicable Me 4, which headed the UK box office last week, has moved down to second with £3.1 million. This 37% drop brings its running total to £25.3 million. The minion characters from the franchise recently featured during the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The disaster movie Twisters is in third place with £1.5 million. It is ahead of Disney's Inside Out 2, with£1.1 million. This pushes the animated sequel's UK box office total to over £50 million.
The Nicolas Cage-starring horror Longlegs is in fifth place, adding £723,000 for a £5.7 million cumulative gross.
A Quiet Place: Day One has added £168,000 in its sixth weekend in cinemas. This places it ahead of the Indian romantic comedy Bad Newz with £59,607 and Jane Schoenbrun's thriller I Saw the TV Glow, which has opened with £59,149.
Ti West's MaXXXine is approaching the end of its theatrical release window and has made £974,096. This is more than double the cumulative gross of Pearl (2023) and over £330,000 clear of X (2022), the other films in West's X trilogy.
