Sky has released a trailer starring for an upcoming biopic about American photojournalist Lee Miller, portrayed by Kate Winslet.
Lee, directed by Ellen Kuras, will focus on Miller’s life during her time as a war correspondent and photographer during the Second World War.
Miller’s photographs from that period are well known for highlighting the Nazi atrocities at Buchenwald and Dachau. Miller was also well known for her modelling career, her work with surrealists such as Man Ray, and her commercial fashion photography.
The film will also focus on aspects of Miller’s personal and family. This includes her marriage with artist Roland Penrose, played by Alexander Skarsgård. Artistic connections and collaborations with artists like Picasso and Man Ray will also be included, as will Miller’s career at Vogue.
Winslet received patronising replies from male executives when trying to secure funding for Lee. She told Vogue “The men who think you want and need their help are unbelievably outraging.”
Josh O’Connor will also feature as Miller and Penrose’s son, Antony Penrose. Andy Samberg will portray photographer David E. Scherman. Noémie Merlant, known for her role in Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019) is set to star as artist and resistance member Nusch Eluard. Additionally, Marion Cotillard has been cast as Vogue France editor and concentration camp survivor Solange d’Ayen.
Kuras is well known for her cinematography work on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) and I Shot Andy Warhol (1996). She has also worked with directors such as Spike Lee, Michel Gondry, and Martin Scorsese.
The documentary The Betrayal – Nerakhoon (2008) was Kuras’ directorial debut. She has since directed episodes of Ozark (2017-2022), The Umbrella Academy (2019-Present), and Inventing Anna (2022). Lee will be Ellen Kuras’ feature debut.
Lee will be released in UK cinemas on 13th September 2024.
