A trailer for the upcoming psychological thriller A Different Man has been released by A24.
The film stars Sebastian Stan, Adam Pearson, and Renate Reinsve. Stan is best known for his role as Bucky Barnes, AKA The Winter Soldier, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
A Different Man had its premiere at Sundance in January 2024, before playing at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival, where Stan won a Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance. The film was also nominated for the Golden Bear.
A Different Man focuses on Edward (Stan), an actor with neurofibromatosis who undergoes surgery to change the way his face looks. After the transformation, Edward becomes enraged and bitter towards fellow actor Oswald (Pearson), who is playing him in a stage production.
Pearson himself has neurofibromatosis, as does his brother Neil. Pearson previously spoke to the BBC about his experiences of living with the condition.
A Different Man is writer-director Adam Schimberg's third feature film after Go Down Death (2013) and Chained for Life (2018). The latter film also stars Pearson and won numerous awards, including Best Narrative Feature at the 2019 Florida Film Festival.
Additionally, Schimberg was named as one of Variety's 10 Directors to Watch for 2024. He told Variety that, when planning the film, he was “thinking about the broad psychological cliche that the way we judge others is a reflection or a manifestation of the way we feel about ourselves, so I just literalized that.”
Nine Days (2020) cinematographer Wyatt Garfield and Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022) editor Taylor Levy join Schimberg as members of the crew.
A Different Man was first announced in June 2022. It is a co-production between A24, Killer Films, and Grand Motel Films.
A Different Man will be released in UK cinemas on 20th September 2024.
