A new trailer for the upcoming sci-fi horror Alien: Romulus has been released by .

The latest instalment, which is the seventh film in the franchise, is being directed by Fede Álvarez. Originally, Alien: Romulus was due to be released on Hulu, but will now have a theatrical release. It is set between the events of the original Alien (1979) and its sequel Aliens (1986).

A new Alien film was first announced in 2019 following the acquisition of 21st Century Fox by Disney.

Alien: Romulus is co-written by Álvarez and Rodo Sayagues. The pair previously worked together on Evil Dead (2013) and Don't Breathe (2016), which won Best Horror Film at the 43rd Saturn Awards. Álvarez recently posted a short video of a facehugger used in the film, created by Weta Workshop.

Cailee Spaeny, known for her roles in Priscilla (2023) and Civil War (2024), stars as Rain Carradine. She is joined in the cast by David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, and Isabela Merced.

Ridley Scott, who directed the original Alien film, Prometheus (2012), and Alien: Covenant (2017), is involved as a producer. Benjamin Wallfisch, co-composer of Blade Runner 2049 (2017), will provide the score. Variety has also reported that some technical crew members from Aliens have returned to work on Alien: Romulus, although they did not specify exactly who.

Alien was named by the American Film Institute (AFI) as the seventh-best science fiction film of all time. It ranks ahead of Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), and Back to the Future (1985). Other films in the franchise include Alien 3 (1992) and Alien: Resurrection (1997), and the crossover films Alien vs. Predator (2004) and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007).

Alien: Romulus is released in UK cinemas on 16th August 2024.
