MUBI has released a trailer and official artwork for Crossing, the award-winning LGBT+ drama from Swedish director Levan Akin.
The distributor has also confirmed that Crossing will have a theatrical release window later this summer. It will arrive on MUBI's streaming platform at the end of August.
The news follows MUBI's acquisition of the film back in January. At the time, Akin told The Hollywood Reporter “I adore MUBI, so to have their dedicated team of cinema lovers release this film so broadly warms my celluloid heart.”
Crossing focuses on Lia (Mzia Arabuli), a retired teacher living in Georgia. She learns from her young and unpredictable neighbour Achi (Lucas Kankava) that her transgender niece Tekla has crossed the border into Turkey. Lia and Achi travel to Istanbul to find her. While there, they meet Evrim (Deniz Dumanli), a transgender lawyer, who helps them with their search.
Crossing received its world premiere at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival, where it won a Jury Prize from the Teddy Award jury. The jury specialises in international LGBT+ cinema. The film's UK premiere came at the BFI Flare Film Festival in March 2024.
Akin's previous films include And Then We Danced (2019), a Georgian drama about a love affair between two male dancers. The film was screened at that year's Sundance Film Festival. And Then We Danced was Sweden's entry for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, but it was not nominated.
Crossing reunites Akin with cinematographer Lisabi Fridell, with the pair having worked together on And Then We Danced. Production design comes from Roger Rosenberg, who previously worked on Joachim Trier's The Worst Person in the World (2021).
Crossing releases in UK cinemas on 19th July 2024. It will then be available to stream via MUBI from 30th August 2024.
