The BBC has announced that a second series of Boarders is currently in development.
The first series, which premiered on 20th February, holds a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It was created by the British actor and writer Daniel Lawrence Taylor.
Boarders follows five Black inner-city teenagers from London who are awarded places at the prestigious St. Gilbert's school after gaining scholarships. There, they have to deal with rivalries with their new school peers and culture clashes. The first season ended with uncertainty regarding the school's future following Headteacher Bernard's (Derek Riddell) suspension, with an interim replacement being appointed.
Taylor has previously discussed how the show was partly inspired by his own experiences at university, and after speaking to friends who attended private schools.
Josh Tedeku, Jodie Campbell, Myles Kamwendo, Aruna Jalloh, and Sekou Diaby will all reprise their roles.
Taylor told the BBC “The response to the first series has been incredibly inspiring, and I'm thrilled to announce the arrival of our second! What I've cherished most about creating this series is showcasing Black experiences on screen and seeing how it resonates with everyone. While race can sometimes divide us, the emotions of feeling different, isolated, or trying to fit in are truly universal.
“I'm especially excited to collaborate with the cast again; they are all budding superstars, and I'm overjoyed to see them bring my words to life once more! I can't wait for you to see it!”
Additionally, Director of BBC Drama Lindsay Salt said in a statement “With brilliant scripts from Daniel and star-making performances from its young cast, Boarders has received a fantastic response since arriving on BBC iPlayer and BBC Three earlier this year. We're delighted to enrol for another term.”
No release date for the second season of Boarders has been confirmed.
