A UK theatrical release date has been confirmed for Unicorns, the cross-cultural romance directed by
Sally El Hosaini and James Krishna Floyd.
The news follows Unicorns‘ world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. Its UK premiere came at the BFI London Film Festival.
Signature Entertainment also released a new trailer to coincide with the announcement. This follows the company's acquisition of the film in January 2024, as reported by Variety.
Unicorns stars Bohemian Rhapsody‘s Ben Hardy and Jason Patel in his feature acting debut. The film focuses on the relationship between a queer Brithsh-Indian drag star living a double life, and a single father from Essex who works as a mechanic. When they meet, an unexpected romance begins, triggering a journey of self-reflection and identity.
Nisha Nayar, Empire of Light‘s Hannah Onslow, and Sagar Radia also star in the film.
Welsh-Egyptian filmmaker El Hosaini is also known for The Swimmers (2022). The biographical sports drama was nominated for Outstanding British Film at the 76th British Academy Film Awards. Floyd starred in The Swimmers as Emad, and Unicorns represents the actor's directorial debut. Floyd also starred in El Hosaini's first feature film as a director, My Brother the Devil (2012).
Aside from Bohemian Rhapsody, in which he played Queen drummer Roger Taylor, Hardy is also known for his role as Peter Beale in Eastenders. Additionally, he has featured in X-Men: Apocalypse (2016), Michael Bay's 6 Underground (2019), and the romantic comedy Love at First Sight (2023).
Manchester-born Patel is a musician who has studied at the Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance in London. His work has been recognised with Artist of The Week & Track of The Week kudos from BBC Asian Network and BBC Introducing.
Unicorns is released in UK cinemas on 5th July 2024.
