Some first-look images from the upcoming second season of The Last of Us have been released.
The images were shared last Wednesday by Casey Bloys, the CEO of HBO, at the Warner Bros. Discovery presentation in New York City
The first series gathered high acclaim, scoring 24 Primetime Emmy nominations and eight Emmy wins. HBO's adaption of The Last of Us ended its first season in March 2023.
The season one finale, ‘Look For The Light', saw Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) reach the Fireflies' Salt Lake City outpost. There, the young girl is retained in a hospital to try and obtain her immunity to cure the continuing Cordyceps pandemic.
Discussing Pascal and Ramsey's performances in season one, Bloys previously told The Hollywood Reporter “I think it's pretty clear from the beginning they're both incredibly soulful and give extraordinary performances. The love that has to develop between these two characters for you to care was there in spades.”
The series is a co-production between Sony Pictures Television and Naughty Dog. Naughty Dog published the original games that the television series is based on.
Confirmed episode directors for season two include Loki's Kate Herron, Succession‘s Mark Mylod, and Watchmen‘s Stephen Williams.
The Last of Us has also added new cast members for season two. These include Kaitlyn Dever from Booksmart (2019), Isabela Merced from Transformers: The Last Knight (2017), and Danny Ramirez from Top Gun: Maverick (2022). Additionally, the Emmy award-winner Catherine O'Hara has been cast in a guest-starring role.
Returning cast members from season one include Gabriel Luna as Tommy, and Rutina Wesley as Tommy's wife Maria.
The second season of The Last of Us began filming in February. It is due to be released at an unconfirmed date in 2025.
