A brand new Tomb Raider series is coming to Amazon Prime.

Deadline reports that the streamer has given a series order for the project, which is based on the acclaimed game series of the same name.

The new show will be written and developed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. The actor, screenwriter, and producer is the creator of the BAFTA-winning comedy series Fleabag.

In a statement, Waller-Bridge said “If I could tell my teenage self this was happening I think she'd explode.

“Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators. Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can't wait to go on this adventure.”

Additionally, Head of Amazon & MGM Studios Jen Salke described the new show as “epic” and “globe-trotting.”

Reports in early 2023 revealed that the series would fall under a first-look deal between and the video game company Crystal Dynamics.

No casting announcements have been made.

Tomb Raider, originally released in 1996, followed the adventures of archaeologist and adventurer Lara Croft. Multiple sequels followed, including Tomb Raider 2 (1997) and Tomb Raider: Chronicles (2000).

Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix previously rebooted the video game series in 2013.

In April 2023, Lara Croft was voted as the most iconic video game character of all time. The poll of gamers placed Croft ahead of the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario.

The franchise has previously been adapted for the big screen. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001), starring Angelina Jolie, grossed $274 million worldwide. Its sequel, The Cradle of Life, arrived in 2003.

Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander starred as Croft in a 2018 reboot, which was partially based on the latest series of games.
