Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has landed at the top of the UK box office following its opening weekend in cinemas.
George Miller's post-apocalyptic action film achieved a £2 million debut. Furiosa is a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), also directed by Miller. Screen Daily reports that Fury Road debuted with over double the total of Furiosa, grossing £4.5 million during its opening weekend nine years ago.
The prequel stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, and Tom Burke.
John Krasinski's IF and last week's number one Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes are in second and third respectively. Both films increased their UK box office totals by £1.6 million.
The Garfield Movie opened in fourth place with £1.5 million. The animated comedy has now grossed £2.8 million. This includes takings from early previews screened in collaboration with MediCinema.
The Fall Guy has fallen from third to fifth, with only a 9% drop compared to last week. The action comedy has made an additional £752,359.
The Strangers: Chapter One brought in an additional £347,627 to bring its UK box office total to over £1 million. Globally, the horror movie has now made $25 million on an $8.5 million budget.
Challengers has dropped to seventh in its fifth weekend, with £206,509. This takes its UK total to just under £6 million. Back to Black grossed an additional £102,908 to bring its UK box office gross to over £12 million. It is followed by Kung Fu Panda 4, in its ninth week of release, with £85,140.
Alice Rohrwacher's La Chimera, starring Josh O'Connor, made an additional £75,336 for a UK total of £477,057. The Italy-set drama has grossed more in its third weekend of release than it did across its debut.
