Studios has released the first images of Batman: Caped Crusader, an animated Batman series arriving on the platform later this summer.

The new show is a joint project led by The Batman director, Matt Reeves, animator Bruce Timm, and J.J. Abrams. Timm previously worked as a character designer for Batman: The Animated Series, The New Batman Adventures, and Batman Beyond.

The Hollywood Reporter states that the new series is intended as a “reimagining of the Batman mythology.”

Batman: Caped Crusader was originally meant to stream on HBO Max. However, it was cancelled by WB Discovery. This allowed Amazon to purchase the rights to the series, and in March 2023 the studio ordered two seasons of the new show.

The series takes place in the 1940s, similar to the 2001 graphic novel Batman: Gotham Noir by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. The new show is set within its own continuity.

No casting announcements for the series have been announced. Timm has confirmed though that Harley Quinn is Asian-American in Batman: Caped Crusader and that she will appear without The Joker.

Longtime Batman voice actor Kevin Conroy passed away in November 2022. Additionally, Arleen Sorkin (the original voice actor for Harley Quinn) died in August 2023.

Discussing the show's new take on Batman, Timm told Entertainment Weekly that “He's a really weird human being. He's not obsessed with his parents' murder, but it changed him in a way where he's still not adjusted to being a human being. He's literally Batman; inside, that's who he is. Whenever he's Bruce Wayne, that's not just him with a mask off, that's him wearing a person suit. He's trying to pretend to be something that he's not.”

Batman Caped Crusader is released on Prime Video on 1st August 2024.
