The Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black has opened at the top of the UK box office following its first weekend in cinemas.
Sam Taylor-Johnson's film, which has been in production since 2018, opened with a £2.7 million debut and opened in 719 cinemas. According to Screen Daily, this makes Back to Black the widest UK release so far this year.
Back to Black has exceeded the opening weekend total of Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody (2022). It has also already outgrossed the John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy (2009), also directed by Taylor-Johnson. However, it has not matched the £4.2 million opening weekend figure of Bob Marley: One Love, which was released back in February.
Kung Fu Panda 4 fell to second place and added £1.8 million to its UK gross, which now stands at £17.3 million – the highest out of any of the weekend's top five films. Alex Garland's Civil War opened in third with a £1.6 million debut. This makes it the most successful opening weekend for any film directed by Garland, outperforming Ex Machina (2015), and it is already the ninth-most successful film in A24's history.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire fell from second to fifth, adding £1.2 million to its UK box office total. The monster movie has now made approximately £11.9 million in the UK and just under $440 million worldwide in its third weekend of release.
Dune: Part Two, after adding over £567,000 to its total, has now entered the top 100 most successful films in UK box office history. It has also exited the top five for the first time since its release seven weeks ago.
Dev Patel's Monkey Man has added approximately £387,000 to bring its cumulative total to £1.7 million.
