Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's new feature film Trap.
The mystery thriller is led by Josh Hartnett, best known for his roles in Pearl Harbour (2001) and Oppenheimer (2023). The film also stars Ariel Donoghue, Hayley Mills, and Allison Pill.
Trap follows the story of a serial killer who takes his daughter to a pop concert, only to realise the event is actually an elaborate sting operation to bring him down.
Shyamalan is co-producing alongside Marc Bienstock and Ashwin Rajan.
Trap is the latest of Shyamalan's theatrical releases, with his other recent films including Knock at the Cabin (2023) and Old (2021). His latest film is also the first to be released since he struck a multi-year deal with the Warner Bros. Pictures Group.
Shyamalan previously spoke to Complex about why he does not make films for release on streaming services, saying “I believe in this art form of the movie theater. I don't believe the narrative that has been told. I knew [streaming services] weren't going to work. It's what it is, an elaborate home video.”
Trap will also serve as the feature acting debut for musician Saleka Shyamalan (known professionally as Saleka), M. Night Shyamalan's eldest daughter. The singer's debut album, Seance, was released last year.
Another of M. Night Shyamalan's daughters, Ishana Night Shyamalan, will be making her directorial debut in June with the supernatural horror movie The Watched. Her father will serve as a co-producer.
Shyamalan was nominated for the Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay and Best Director for The Sixth Sense (1999). His other notable films include The Happening (2008), The Last Airbender (2010), and Split (2016).
Shyamalan's films have grossed over $3.3 billion at the global box office.
Trap is released in cinemas worldwide on 9th August 2024.
