The Matrix will return to cinemas this summer to celebrate its 25th anniversary.

will distribute a 4K restoration of the Wachowskis' science fiction epic this June, as revealed by EMPIRE.

Originally released in 1999, The Matrix focuses on the unassuming hacker Neo (Keanu Reeves) who learns the truth of his existence from the mysterious Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) and Trinity (Moss). Neo realises that he is actually a pawn living in a simulated world, while his real body is being harvested by machines who have taken over the world from humanity.

The film received five BAFTA nominations with a win for Best Achievement in Visual Effects, and won four Academy Awards including Best Film Editing. The mind-bending thriller remains a massive box office success, earning more than $467 million worldwide. The Matrix was previously rereleased for its 20th anniversary in 2019.

The original film's return to cinemas follows the announcement earlier in April that a fifth Matrix film is in development. Drew Goddard, screenwriter for The Martian (2015), is set to direct and co-write the project with Lana Wachowski joining as an executive producer.

It has not been confirmed if any of The Matrix series stars will return, including Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, who reprised their roles for Lana Wachowski's The Matrix Resurrections (2021). Plot details for the new film have not been disclosed.

' President of Production and Development Jesse Ehrman told EMPIRE that “Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honouring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters.”

The Matrix is released in UK cinemas on 7th June 2024.
