A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, an upcoming prequel series, has cast Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall and Dexter Sol Ansell as his squire, Egg.

Game of Thrones author George R.R Martin has confirmed that the show will be an adaptation of his novella The Hedge Knight (1998), set in 209 AC – a century or so before the events of the main series. The novella focuses on the two unlikely heroes as they wander around Westeros. The Hedge Knight forms part of the Dunk and Egg stories, Dunk and Egg being the nicknames for Ser Duncan and his squire respectively.

EMPIRE reports that future seasons will likely adapt other books from the Dunk and Egg collection. The ongoing series so far comprises The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword (2003), and The Mystery Knight (2010).

Claffey is best known for his role in Small Things Like These (2024), starring Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy. He has also been cast in the third season of Vikings: Valhalla, which is due to premiere later this year. Ansell meanwhile starred in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023) as a young Coriolanus Snow.

In the novels, Egg is the name given by Ser Duncan to the young King Aegon V Targaryen. Aegon later becomes king after his elder brother Aemon refuses the throne. Aemon subsequently joined the Night's Watch, where he would meet Jon Snow around the year 297 AC, as seen in Game of Thrones.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight will be the third television series to adapt Martin's books, after Game of Thrones which concluded in 2019 and the ongoing House of the Dragon prequel series. House of the Dragon‘s second season will be released on 16th June 2024.
