Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has roared to the top of the UK Box Office in its opening weekend, outperforming industry expectations in the process.
The fifth film in Legendary's MonsterVerse, directed by Adam Wingard, has grossed almost £4.1 million across the Bank Holiday weekend. This weekend's total is higher than the £2.7 million total of 2021's Godzilla vs. Kong.
It is the second-highest opening for any MonsterVerse film in the UK, down only compared to Godzilla's £5.2 million in 2014. Godzilla x Kong's total UK gross now stands at almost £5 million less than one week after its release.
The film's box office performance was enough to see off Kung Fu Panda 4, which took in £3.9 million over the same period after showing at over 700 sites. The new film in the animated franchise, starring Jack Black in the titular role of Po the Panda, also made £1.2 million from Monday previews.
Last week's number one film, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, fell to third place with £2.1 million, which according to Screen Daily marks a drop of 47.5%.
Dune: Part Two, in its fifth weekend of release, grossed an additional £1.7 million in fourth place. This takes the film's UK box office total to £34.5 million, making it the most successful film of the year so far. It is also significantly more than the £22.1 million made by 2021's Dune.
Mother's Instinct, featuring Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain, rounded out the top five.
Wonka, starring Timothée Chalamet and marking its 17th weekend in cinemas, is now one of the UK box office's 25 most successful films.
The figures are all still subject to the Bank Holiday Monday ticket sales, which have yet to be confirmed.
