Amazon has confirmed that a  spin-off series is in development.

The project will be produced by Reese Witherspoon, who starred in the leading role of Elle Woods in both Legally Blonde (2001) and Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde (2003). The two films have a combined worldwide box office gross of over $267 million.

While the premise of the series hasn't been disclosed, it has been announced that Gossip Girl (2007) developers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are involved as writers and executive producers. No release date for the series has been confirmed.

Witherspoon founded her production firm Hello Sunshine with Seth Rodsky in 2016. The company has had success in recent years with projects such as Big Little Lies (2017), Little Fires Everywhere (2020), and Where the Crawdads Sing (2022). This upcoming Legally Blonde series will be Hello Sunshine's third collaboration with Amazon MGM following Something From Tiffany's (2022) and Daisy Jones and the Six (2023).

A third film, Legally Blonde 3, also produced by Witherspoon, has been in development for several years. The Sex Lives of College Girls‘ Mindy Kaling and Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s Dan Goor are listed as screenwriters.

With the Amazon acquisition of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), Amazon is reportedly interested in further adding to the franchise. It is not alone in this, as Variety reports that the Barbershop and RoboCop franchises could also see new entries as part of the aquisition.

The new series would not be the first Legally Blonde spin-off. A direct-to-DVD film, Legally Blondes (2009), was also produced by Witherspoon and stars Camilla & Rebecca Rosso. The film also led to a 2007 musical adaptation which was performed both on Broadway and in the West End. The production was nominated for seven Tony awards, including Best Book of a Musical and Best Choreography.
