“I think August has changed the most” — Malte Gardinger Talks Young Royals Season 3

Malte Gårdinger in Young Royals Season 3

And so, the end is here — the third and final season of Young Royals is now here for fans to say their painful goodbye to. Star Malte Gardinger sat down with FILMHOUNDS to find out what we can expect from the show's final outing.

What are you most excited for the fans to see this time around?

The whole package. That's the same with like every season. It's really exciting to show everyone what we've been working on for like a year.

A year must be an incredibly long time to dedicate to one project. Do you have a favourite thing about filming? Is it tough sometimes?

Yeah, of course. The early mornings and night shoots are probably in the top ten of things that bug you a bit. But overall you have to be grateful that you're able to get the chance to be a part of something like this. So it usually helps just remind yourself of that. It's mostly very fun. And I've got all of my friends there also. So it makes it easy.

I imagine the Young Royals world is quite different from your real life. How do you approach playing someone so different from you?

Good writing, first and foremost. It's so easy to go the safe route in a way, but the writing and having long talks about the characters are amazing. Really letting yourself try to understand, because I really tried my best.

The show so has such a distinct fan reaction. Do you get to interact with it at all? Does it influence what you do?

Not for me personally. I'm generally pretty bad at keeping up on social media, but even more so during shoots. I think that sort of stuff gets in your head and you start to become more conscious of what you're doing, which is I think a bad thing. You just want to be immersed in it. So I try to stay off. But now it's finished, I'm going to have a long look through everything.

Do you think your character has changed since the last time we saw him in Season 2?

Yeah. Like everyone, every character. August probably changes the most throughout the whole series which is a very nice arc.

How do you think the new series is different from what fans have seen before?

The juice. If you think you've seen juice, this is something else. There are going to be a lot of twists and turns. Hopefully, it's also different from the other seasons because it's actually the end. It's our final goodbye.

Talking about that final goodbye — was that something that you felt ready for? Does it feel like the right decision?

I think all of us are, be happy with it. It's bittersweet and it's also sad to say goodbye to everyone. But I think we're all in agreement that it's time to let them be free and roam on their own. So I think I think that's a good decision to end on Season 3. I'm pretty bad at grasping things so I don't think it's sunk in yet. Maybe in a couple of months.
