Wendell Pierce Cast As Perry White In James Gunn’s Superman

Wendell Pierce Jack Ryan Superman

Wendell Pierce, best known as the cantankerous Detective Bunk from The Wire (2002-2008), has been cast in James Gunn's upcoming Superman film as Perry White.

The news of Pierce's casting was first broken by The Hollywood Reporter (THR), although there has been no official announcement from . or director James Gunn.

White is the long-serving editor of Metropolis' number one newspaper, The Daily Planet, as well as both Clark Kent and Lois Lane's boss.

News of Pierce's casting is one of the very few official confirmations regarding the new film, which was also recently renamed from Superman Legacy to just Superman.

Pierce's other acting credits include the attorney Robert Zane in Suits (2013-2019), Reverend Tillman in Burning Cane (2019), and James Greer in Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan (2018-2023). He has also been nominated for a Tony Award for his performance as Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman on Broadway in 2022.

Pierce is joining a cast featuring We Own This City‘s David Corenswet and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel's Rachel Brosnahan as Superman and Lane respectively. Corenswet and Brosnahan's involvement was confirmed by Gunn in May 2023, in response to another story from THR.

The casting of Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho has also been confirmed by Gunn, again in response to a THR exclusive. Carrigan previously played the sociopathic killer Victor Zsasz in Gotham (2014-2019).

Also appearing in Superman will be For All Mankind‘s Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Firefly‘s Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, and The Great‘s Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. It has previously been speculated that Hoult may have been in line to play Superman before his casting as Luthor was announced last December.

Superman is in pre-production and is currently scheduled for a worldwide release date of 11th July 2025.
