The Garfield Movie Gets A New Trailer

The Garfield Movie Trailer

Sony Pictures has released a new trailer for Mark Dindal's upcoming animated feature The Movie, Garfield the Cat's sixth film outing.

The trailer, which starts by tugging at the heartstrings before descending into the stomach-driven antics that the fat orange cat is known for, sees Garfield (Chris Pratt) reunited with his estranged father Vic (Samuel L. Jackson). He then must take a break from his human John (Nicholas Hoult) to join his father and the hapless canine Odie on a bizarre adventure. The cast also features Ted Lasso's Hannah Waddingham, Pulp Fiction's Ving Rhames, and Saturday Night Live's Cecily Strong.

In addition, What We Do in the Shadows' Harvey Guillén provides vocal sound effects for Odie, while Snoop Dogg has a role as Snoop Catt.

Dindal's previous films include Cats Don't Dance (1997), The Emperor's New Groove (2000), and Chicken Little (2005). He has also worked as an artist for over two dozen Disney projects since 1981.

The film is being written by Paul A. Kaplan, Mark Torgove, and David Reynolds. Reynolds previously worked with Dindal on The Emperor's New Groove. Garfield's original creator, Jim Davis, is also involved in the new film as the movie's art director and an executive producer.

Garfield's last cinematic outings were Garfield: The Movie (2004) and Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties (2006), which combined made over $350 million at the box office. Bill Murray voiced Garfield on both occasions, having reportedly mistaken one of the screenwriters for Joel Coen of the Coen Brothers (although co-writer Alec Sokolow disputed this story in a 2014 Reddit thread). Three direct-to-video films have also been released; Garfield Gets Real (2007), Garfield's Fun Fest (2008), and Garfield's Pet Force (2009).

The Garfield Movie is released in cinemas worldwide on 24th May 2024.
