FILMHOUNDS Magazine

All things film – In print and online

Dazed and Confused (Blu-ray Review)

The seminal 90's teen film Dazed and Confused is set for a new 4k digital restoration of the director's cut. FILMHOUNDS was lucky enough to get an advance copy, and let us tell you, it is fantastic.

The story, of course, is classic. Set in 1976, it follows a group of students on their last school day in Texas.  With incredible performances by Parker Posey, Matthew McConaughey, and Joey Lauren Adams to name a few, the film shines. It was a launch pad for many now-famous stars. This was also 's first studio effort and he does not disappoint. More than thirty years later, the film is still incredibly quotable.

There is no central storyline. The film is very much in the same vein as American Graffiti, with its ensemble cast and slice-of-life view. It is also hilarious and every teenager should see this film. Upon its release, the film was initially a flop. But after its release on VHS, it became a cult classic.

The new 4k update is exquisite. The picture is clear and has taken great lengths to ensure the quality. It's an upgrade from previous versions, for those who have seen prior home versions. It is like you are watching the original print in the theatre rather than a poor facsimile. Even if your TV is small and not very theatre-like, the quality is still high.

What also stands out is the number of extras that Criterion has included. Not all of it is necessarily new, but it is a welcome addition for any fan. The audio commentary from Richard Linklater is from 2006, however it is incredibly thorough. Unlike other directors, he speaks constantly throughout, providing a font of information. In addition to this, there is also behind-the-scenes footage, audition footage, interviews, and a by Kahane Cooperman titled, “Dazed” about the making of the film.
